Tomorrow's Tech Today: iphone

I like to take a minute every once in a while to put things into perspective. Realize things that were fantasy just a few years ago that fit in our pockets today.

That is no more true than with today's focus. iphone. The little microchip doodad taking the world by storm. This is a process that goes on in my head on a regular basis. A "this is the future" mindset, even though we completely got gipped on the flying car thing. (I'm looking at you Back to the Future 2. You still got 7 years to prove me wrong) This was brought even more to my attention as I watched "Batman Tech" on History Channel Sunday with my brother. They discussed Batman's ability to take real technologies and make them small. I don't know how many times they flashed the iphone.

I've always done this in a progressive manner. Just two years ago, I was playing Doom RPG on my cell phone. A regular cell phone. While it wasn't a full fledged Doom game, it was comparable, graphically. So in my hand was something as powerful as, if not more so than that old 486DX-33 computer that filled a computer desk and cost $3,000+ in 1993 when I was introduced full fledged into the world of computers.

The iphone does this even more so. We are talking, especially with the latest update and App Store, a device that fits in my hand, that I can almost replace my laptop with. I can aptly surf the internet, anywhere. (except my dad's house.)

Of course, with me, I'm a video gamer. So a nice bonus to this was the arrival of gaming on the iphone. Sega is involved. You've arrived when the likes of the Sonic guys, Vivendi, and even id Software's own John Carmack step up with new games, new announcements, and quotes ranging from the iphone being comparable in power to the Sega Dreamcast, to Carmack claiming power reaching that of Playstation 2 and Xbox. The greatest catch, to me, is that people have had this powerful hardware for a full year before being able to even know it was there. I've played Super Monkey Ball (but haven't on the console, in full disclosure). This seems like real gaming on a phone. There are only a handful of real games, mostly racing, Wii ports, and Monkeys, but the real stuff is coming.

So now I am constatnly attached to everything that involves my tech-centric life. I can sit on the train and check my email on the way to work, while listening to some music, checking my morning twitters, and switch up to a video podcast or Super Monkey Ball. One of the Mayhemers tonight told me "It's not a phone, it's a life style changing device." So true.

Next, I might tackle the internet in general.

Vacation Ho!!!

It's finally here. A real damn vacation. A real chance to recharge my batteries and let loose.

Almost.

Last year, I didn't do much for a vacation. I couldn't go anywhere, didn't really have the money. But Will was kind enough to bring me along to the middle of nowhere to hang out and play video games for two days. This, plus the cutting of our Christmas office closing and all the things that have come up over the past year that felt like one kick in the nuts after another, and I'm pretty damn frazzled.

This year, I vowed early to make up for it. Travel somewhere. First, I was going to fly. Finally conquer that fear. But after some analysis, I realized that a train would be cheaper and less stressful, and a new experience. So we went for it. That, on top of the Mad Mike up in the Bronx always up for us to come back after our Mayhem Takes Manhattan trip back in January, and the pieces fit together.

The agenda? I leave Wednesday on a 9 hour train ride to Penn Station in the heart of the city. Then, all I plan on is an Ring of Honor show at the Hammerstein Ballroom (old ECW hot spot) and drinking. A lot.

It's time for Sorg to get away, but no worries, I'll be back with many stories, and hopefully, some video like last time, as you can see by my last couple WTF Videos, lately.

But before I take off, I'm doing my best to take part in a bit of a "staycation". This consisted of video games. Lots of video games. I tackled much of Gears of War and started some Halo 2 co-op play. I never thought it'd be that much fun, and I don't mind the split screen on a larger screen that I have now.

Also, I determined I'm going to rediscover the city a little bit. There are a few things around I have been wanting to see again, or for the first time. Last weekend, I visited the zoo with my mother and brother. Saturday, we hopped the train and walked over to the Heinz History Center in the strip. I don't think Matt had been over there aside from the last ICP concert at "Club Zoo" where we got pictures to be in the City Paper. The place is pretty cool. I was disappointed that the "Points in Time" wing was closed. This was where the kennywood and steel areas were, from what I recalled some ten years ago when my late grandmother brought me down there. But the surprise was the extensice Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, which emcompassed two stories of the newer section of the center.

And, of course, we had a hilarious came night of Halo with Will, Chachi, MissyJo, and Chachi's sister. We need more of these.

WTF Was I Thinking Video: Dennis Gregory's Bed!

In honor of my return to New York City later this week, I thought I'd throw up another video from our last trip back in January. In this one, Chad the Shad finds Dennis Gregory's bed.

  • Dennis Gregory is the current IWC Champion that, I believe Chad, dubbed a "Bum", and has developed to a big chant whenever he comes out at shows.
  • Chad found this after climbing a rock in Central Park.
  • I had no idea he had a marker in his pocket.
  • I don't know how many wrestlers have responded "so that was you guys that did the Denny Bum Bed video!?"
  • Chad has started to throw change at the ground in front of Denny and shaking bottles of change to get his attention. Because he's a bum...

Friday5: Dead Girls

A wee bit late. But I started writing this somewhere in my busy Friday! Here we go...
  1. When you go to the beach, lake, or pool, are you more likely to lower yourself gradually into cold water or to take a determined plunge and get it over with?
I do recall when I was younger, I would do the slower, creeping method. In time, when I became a bit bolder in general, I would just jump in and get on with it.
  2. How is this like (or unlike) your approach to other tasks or ordeals?
I do recall when I was younger, I would do the slower, creeping method. In time, when I became a bit bolder in general, I would just jump in and get on with it.
  3. When someone gives you flowers, are you more likely to let them turn completely brown and gross before throwing them out, or to discard them the moment they take on that sick-flower look?
I hold on to them as long as I can. I take much stock in gifts and hate to throw things away.
  4. How is this like (or unlike) your approach to other gifts, purchases, or relationships?
I typically hang on to things of sentimental value, or that I just think are neat. For instance, I held onto some computer parts far past any life of usability because I considered them a bit of a history lesson of computers. I finally convinced myself to give them to Goodwill. I am a bit of a pack rat that way.
  5. Think of your favorite movie (or a movie you really like, if you can’t think of a favorite). Some people say that the reasons you love your favorite movie are related to what you value in romantic relationships. How is this true or untrue in your case?
Really? Because my favorite would have to be Ghostbusters. It has comedy, supernatural, science. So I value funny, smart dead girls? No wonder I'm into Insane Clown Posse...

Well that was a weird one too...So much these things reveal about us...

Who Else is Friday 5-ing? (You know you want to join us…)

WTF Was I Thinking Video: Heroes Recreation

This is a quicky this week. We have our good from from the Wrestling Mayhem Show, Doc Remedy, reenacting one of his favorite scenes from one of his favorite television shows, Heroes.

  • This is from our trip at the end of January where we visited fan of the show, Mad Mike, in New York City.
  • We also attended Royal Rumble at Madison Square Garden.
  • Surprisingly, as scene like this is not even noticed in New York City by it's populace.

Friday5: Food Sick

Back with that Friday5 thing. And make sure to check out the whole gang!
  1. What was the last meal that caused you to be ill?
I haven't experienced a food "poisoning" for a good long time. Mostly, I recall a bad time at Perkins where my two Missy's and myself got exceedingly sick for the next day or so. Then there was a time on the way back from Elmira, NY to visit some reletives when my mother and I stopped at Ponderosa. I had a lot of spaghetti from the buffet...and threw it up as soon as we got home. First major vomiting fit I recall.
  2. Are there any places you never dine anymore because of a bad experience hours after the meal?
I haven't barred anywhere, but I shy away from the China Buffet(or some similar name) on 88 in Castle Shannon. We would hit it for lunch at work, and I would spend a good bit of alone time that afternoon instead of working. It just makes me feel like crud.
  3. What’s your prescription for dealing with a food-caused illness?
Bed. No social interaction. Disappear to myself.
  4. When friends tell you about coming down with food-caused illnesses, do you avoid the places they name, or do you figure it’s a dice-roll wherever you go?
Some people seem to have more issues than I do. I still go to Subway, but plenty of people have problems with it. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger! And if you worry about how your food is handled, don't eat out.
  5. After numerous citations, a very, very popular restaurant that you’re quite fond of is shut down by the health department until it can get everything up to code. When the health department gives the restaurant the o.k. to reopen, do you go? Nope, I'm there on re-opening day. It should be fixed by then, right?

hed pe "D.I.Y. Guys" Review

Before we kick off the latest review, check out my last Dirtball album review over on Loudside.com!

hed pe is a band that's been on the music radar for a long time. Across different labels and, these guys have always brought something different, and with their latest release, the D.I.Y. Guys, we get "to know" the band a little more. This set is a full live/new track CD, along with a full length DVD in the package.

On the album side of things, we get a chance to see the raw, unproduced mayhem sound of their live shows and represent some of the best from their two Suburban Noize releases, "Back 2 Base X" and "Insomnia" live from the legendary Key Club in Hollywood, CA. The studio tracks that round out the album are more of what we can expect from the next album.

Suburban Noize has been doing an amazing job of providing great value in their albums by packing in well produced DVDs with music videos, concert footage, and other extras. This time, D.I.Y. Guys doesn't dissapoint as we have a "sit down" with Jered about everything from music labels, to the road, conspiracy theories, and the conflict arising from Deejay Product's tagging antics and the havoc it wreaks on Brian Zinger (Suburban Noize head honcho), and Beejay (the tour manager). It's raw, it's hilarious, and it rocks.

For the price of a regular CD, you get live tracks, new trakcs, and over an hour of behind the scenes DVD. You can't go wrong if you're a hed pe fan, or just getting to find these guys.

You can see my latest interview with Jered of hed pe on Youtube and Talkshoe for the WPAJ Interview

Why do I do the WPAJ Interview?

It's a question that has crossed my mind recently. I seem to just roll with the flow, and not think about why I do such things. But the WPAJ Interview, in particular, is one of those things. I constantly look for talent of various genres and successes on the web to talk to. But why?

Back "in the day" when I first had a website for no damn reason, I also worked a website for my friends in a band, LYNT. I always just loved, and absorbed music, and thanks to my friends, got to know some good people in other bands in the area. The area being mid-western Pennsylvania. I've always wanted to have a hand in helping some of these guys out. So I started a site at music.sirpsychosexy.net. (I was all about sub domains then.) It featured my friends' band, Darkwater (featuring a fellow now known as Crash), Armed Battery, and others from that time. Mostly, people I met at shows I came along to support at, and the popular MP3.com of the time. I believe I featured this site as a small web project at AIP in one of my classes. This site actually still lives on over at Tripod, now utterly destroyed by banner ads...

So WesternPAJuggalos.com overtook this project in importance, shifting my focus on the community of Juggalos in the area. I was always told I needed to leverage the site to try to land some big interviews (with ICP, Twiztid, etc). Then, almost 2 years ago, I got an email about interviewing some Suburban Noize artists, landing my first interview with Potluck. I took it on with some reservation, not really interested, or confident, in doing the "interview thing." I think I actually attempted to pass it off to Dr. Espling for his Empire magazine, actually. So I did the interview, and the next didn't fall into place. It was several months until I realized that one interview was landing over 300-400 hits a month. Someone found this, it got linked, who knows. We had something. So I started again with another Suburban Noize artist, Dogboy. And the rest is a 40+ interview history later. We've talked to Kottonmouth Kings, a newfound porn director, an ex-Dark Lotus member, and scores of local and unsigned artists. It's great to talk to these bigger names in the scene, and the exposure the feed gets from these big names helps the lesser known artists to get their name out there.

And we've come full circle.

WPAJ Interview: The Awful Show and Shook C

A double hit of the WPAJ Interview this week. Trying to get a few more in before my vacation.

First of all, I had a chance Tuesday night to talk to THA Mike and Nerraux of the Awful Show, a weekly comedy podcast, with hosts based out of both sides of Pennsylvania, and on in Colorado, these guys have been supporting the underground music scene for as long as I've been doing the Mayhem Show and produce hours of content each week. Check out the Awful Nation at www.theawfulshow.com.

I also had a chance to talk to UFL's own Shook C of right here in Pittsburgh, PA tonight about his young start as a rapper, his rap sheet, and hot wings. Check his stuff out on his page, www.myspace.com/shookcindacate.

WTF Was I Thinking Video: Mr. Spiffy vs Dragonkin(with bonus)

This week, we go all the way back to 2001. One of the
"classic" LWF videos). These were videos from a backyard fed that a few of my friends started, and I participated in. Man. Some good times.

  • LWF stands for LYNT Wrestling Federation.
  • LYNT was a band that Adam and Ron (Hatchet Ryda/Mr. Spiffy and Spider) were in at the time. A real band. Not rap like they're into now.
  • We start with an interview by Hatchet Ryda with Scratchy Balls (Chachi) and Spider (now King Nasty).
  • Nice Type O Negative music in the background.
  • Mr. Spiffy is wearing his country club work wear, if I'm not mistaken.
  • Oh hey, who's that referee in an OG ICP shirt?
  • We would eventually introduce LWF at the last Sorgstock of this era.
  • At 10:12 is the greatest performance by Missfit ever.
  • For some reason, at 12:19, you get a bonus match of DJ Sick/EvilJesus(that's me) vs Spider/Scratchy Balls
  • Evil Jesus is not a name I gave myself. Neither is being called Jesus ever since I started at Greenville in 11th grade.
  • Man, we sucked.
  • Mike "Dragonkin" Rowles still lives at that house we're in the backyard of...
  • There's a reason I stay away from hardcore matches these days.
  • I'm not sure I've won too often, if at all, in my "wrestling career" than 2 tag matches.

Friday 5: Midsummer Night's Dream

The Box is doing it. Dawn's doing it. Even Chachi's doing it. It's the Sorgatron Friday5.

1. What are some recurring dreams you’ve had?

I've had dreams where I'm practically face to face with tornados. Zombies were consistent for a while. I remember being a Ninja Turtle a time or two. Flying, or "jumping high" dreams from time to time. Lots of being on stage or in a wrestling ring. I've found myself addicted to performing in front of people and I think my dreams supplement when I have a few weeks I'm not doing it.

2. What is the significance of dreams in telling you about yourself?
My dream seam to remind me when I'm too stressed
They hit a lot of my fears, and sometimes let me get out some anxiety.

3. How do you feel after you’ve had one of THOSE dreams?
Chachi was right. You are a little dirty....

4. What was the last dream you remember?
I remember being somewhere and finding myself separated from everyone else along with someone I didn't know and got stabbed in the side and started bleeding out. Then it was like the dream rewound and I was able to prevent it. Weird.

5. When did you last dream about something that later happened as you dreamt it?
I can't recall anything in particular, but I recall it happening. Usually something small, or a phrase that sticks out later in the day, and I think "wait a minute" but don't really know what it means beyond that.

Subway Bite Back

I wanted to post a response to Thoughtful Nature on the Subway thing.

Really? Subway is that bad?

Now granted, I've had some bad experiences with Subway in the past. Typically from foreigners and emo kids that don't know how to build a sandwich. But I have my prime store I go to on Banksville Rd. that constantly treats me alright. I lived on this stuff when I went to school, and still love to hit it up when i want an alternative to McD's and Wendy's when I'm out or just don't want to cook.

And while it's not your mom and pop deli, or the best food out there, there is something to be said for one feature. Consistency. Subway is everywhere. I can get it downtown, in the 'burbs, sometimes in a WalMart, and even back home in the middle of nowhere. And that's important when you're someplace that doesn't have access to a mom and pop like the general pittsburgh metropolis. Sometimes all you have as the un-corporate alternative are the greasy spoons that are more grease than anything (just because it's family owned, doesn't make it good)

Then, of course, I live in an area where we live next to the money area. I just don't feel like dropping $8 on a sandwich I cam make at home from my fridge.

On an alternative, and I know I was a few months early for "food month" in the blog world with my Sheetz post of a bit back. The upcoming of a gas station that doesn't scare me. When you see that red glow over the hill on the highway, you know you have a higher percentage of a bathroom that doesn't have a water heater in it, prices that don't suck so hard, and a consistently decent quality meatball sub waiting for you on your weary travels.

And as an aside, check out JeredRemembered.com. Thank you, Martin Sargent.

WTF Was I Thinking Video: Basick Grenade

This week, I look back to some good ol' CRAP TV from less than a year ago in East Liverpool, OH. This one was from Juggulated '07, and features a fellow artist on the bill, Basick Sickness (opening for hed pe Tuesday, btw) and Fetus Grenade. (Warning: highly obsene lyrics. I warned you, Papuga.)

  • This video is featured on the CRAP TV Volume 2 DVD I am selling at shows only, so far
  • Basick has a knack for getting into these things. I have another video from this past May's Geneva show.
  • Fetus Grenade was just a couple guys we found hanging outside the venue. There is a another short video of them here.
Just a quickie one this week. Scope www.wrestlingmayhemshow.com for some Stoke Monkey Madness!!!

Hollywood is Dying

On my way to my random drug test today (more on that later) I passed yet another closed Hollywood Video. I've noticed a trend of these stores closing left and right. A trend that has taken over the region. But in the meantime, back in my homestead of Greenville, PA, they just opened a Family Video where as many as three separate independent video stores once populated the town.

And as I turn around, I see Red Box kiosks popping up everywhere, anymore. One of my wrestler guests the other night mentioned using one. Only one of my coworkers seemed to use one, that I know of before. And from time to time, I see a line at these things at Kuhn's.

What is happening to video? There are so many options. So many are picking up services such at Netflix, a service that I champion, that is invaluable, even for the $9 a month I spend on it. One DVD at a time, and thousands of shows and movies that I watch streamed on my lunch break.

But the old video store has thrived less. We've seen mom and pops shut down across the city, the most hurtful victim being Incredibly Strange Video in Dormont. Now, even the big chains are failing. Blockbuster seems to be even failing the transition to the online/netflix model. New plans and options every few months.

Then there's Cable/Satellite Pay per view, itunes stores, and even downloads and rentals on my Xbox 360. Who really uses these except early adopters? And am I spoiled by the "all you can eat" ways of Netflix? Drop $4 on a movie I have to wait to start, then maybe watch one, or within a time frame or just lose that money/movie?

But then there's the lowly Video Shelf in Jamestown, PA. This goes back to my "Disconnected" argument from months back that I still hold to, and serves as an interesting test case of this. A people who are not technologically accessible don't have broadband to take advantage of these things. So their car is their access.

So I'm wondering, who uses these other options? I feel I have an idea of what kind of people use Netflix. Those who embrace new, interesting ideas, and just love movies a LOT. So me. Peewee (the biggest movie buff I know). My brother (who I'm sure I've rubbed off on). Cynthia (who's on my friends list, and I'd say almost breaths the internets).

So who uses Red Box?

Who uses Pay Per View?

Who downloads through itunes or their home gaming consoles?

Who goes to the store on Friday night and toils through the catalog of movies on a shelf?

And who misses that experience?

Kamikazee Hip Hop Show 2

Where the Hell is Carmen Sandiago

I've searched, but could never find Carmen Sandiago. I searched through time, thumbing through this intimidating pocket encyclopedia, using my little gray box, reading mass lines of text instead of jumping on turtles. I never found her. Which means she is beyond time, I've deduced.

Then I sat and watched Rockapella bring me into the world of PBS. And you may think they were a one trick pony. Not so. And the Chief, who I remember from The Warriors would lead the way. The crooks were always easy to catch, but Carmen was far more elusive. But who didn't want to run around a giant United States map!

But they seriously need to work on their security, because they always got out of jail. I thought the Super Hero jails were bad...these guys just have bad costumes.

And seriously. ACME Special Agents? Because their products worked so well for Wile E. Coyote.

No Clue Crew "Unbreakable" Review

I've never felt that I was very good at these things, but people keep asking me to write reviews. So why not. Practice makes perfect. Expect (hed) pe "DIY Guys" CD/DVD in the next couple of days.

I have been a fan, and friend, of the No Clue Crew for several years now. From the days rolling with Twisted Thoughts as they played together, to later Sorgstocks and such in my own group as CRAP. These guys have put out several albums already; "Yule Time Logs", "First Gear", and the "Warlord Ninjas vs Bloawlin' Monks". For the longest time, I've thought that their recordings never equalled the energy of their live performance. Something I've said to them since First Gear.

Finally, after a slight change in lineup, the No Clue Crew is back as a terrible threesome with "Unbreakable". This time around, the Crew shows themselves as more diverse and mature than the past releases. Maybe not in content (the absurdity in lyrics I love about these guys is still intact), but delivery. No Clue specializes on stuff that makes you wonder "WTF?" and pushes the limits. From "Licorice" with King Nasty being a personal favorite on the album, to "Clubzilla" that proves that everyone needs a club song on the album. The guys even go a more inspirational route with "It's About Us" and "Nobody Knows".

This is one of the better examples of "Juggalo Music" that isn't about murder and death all the time.

  • Head to No Clue's site and ask them how you can get that new "Unbreakable" album. It's worth it. It's local (Ohio). And I will have a review up shortly. White Boy Rap FTW!
  • Tell me what you want to see at Sorgstock in August.
That is all.
